Weather reports for 2006-2007:

May 29, 2007:

    * Local thunderstorms developed over many areas of Israel. This May has been one of the most active in recorded history, in some places.

May 16-17, 2007:

    * Another upper-level low passed over Israel. On May 16 severe thunderstorms developed over Jerusalem with 30 mm of rain falling in less than two hours. As a result flash floods occured in east Jerusalem causing property damage, and in the Judean Desert. This is 10 times the entire monthly average, and the second highest daily amount for May in Jerusalem since 1950; the highest occured on May 2 2001 when 71 mm fell in 3 hours. Together with the rains of May 12, May 2007 is set to be among the wettest ever in Jerusalem. On May 17 thunderstorms developed in the Galilee and Hula Valley, with 10 to 27 mm of rain in some areas.

May 12, 2007:

    * A rather deep upper-level low over Israel, along with a surface sharav low east of Israel, caused unseasonably large amounts of rain in many areas of Israel, from the Shfela lowlands eastward to the Jordan River Valley and Arava. 10 to 15 mm fell in most of these areas, while 20 to 30 mm fell in Jerusalem and the Judean Mountains, 5 to 10 times the entire monthly average. The rain was accompanied by thunderstorms and lower-than-average temperatures. As a result of the heavy rain in the Judean Mountains, a flash flood in the Qumran stream in the Judean Desert killed 4 hikers. The intensity of the flood was extreme, a 1-in-50-year event according to the Water Authority.

March 15, 2007:

    * Another winter storm struck Israel, with snowfall above 700 meters in central mountains and above 800 meters in northern mountains, with snow accumulation above 850 meters. The heaviest snow fell in the Palestinian Territory city of Hebron and surrounding mountains, and in the northern Golan Heights, with 15 cm accumulation. Snow fell in Jerusalem and briefly accumulated in the higher neighborhoods, and heavy graupel fell between the snow showers. The snow was accompanied by intense thunderstorms. While March snow in Jerusalem is not as rare as in December, still having snow at both ends of winter but not in the main winter months of January and February is an unusual, perhaps unprecedented, event. Apart from the snow on March 15, the prolonged system (March 14-17) brought around 100 mm of precipitation to many areas especially in central Israel.

January 5-7, 2007:

    * Three consecutive days of rain brought high amounts for most areas of Israel, and along with the previous storm of December 27-28 helped abolish the precipitation deficit and near-drought condition that Israel suffered in the beginning of the season, although some areas in the north still have below-average rainfall totals. Strong thunderstorms affected Jerusalem for several hours on January 5th, along with small but heavy hail. More scattered thunderstorms and hail affected other parts of Israel during January 6. Snow fell in Mount Hermon. Total storm rainfall exceeded 100 mm in some places such as the Judean Mountains and Haifa.

December 27-28, 2006:

    * A winter storm swept through Israel after a long dry spell. On the night of December 26-27 strong thunderstorms with heavy rain dumped up to 70 mm in the Jerusalem area within 8 hours. Similar amounts were measured elsewhere in central Israel. By noon of December 27th very cold air entered the Middle East and heavy snow began to fall in all mountains of Israel higher than 700 meters. Jerusalem, Mevasseret and other mountains in the Jerusalem area accumulated between 5 and 9 cm. The snow in Hebron reached a depth of 15 cm, and in the northern mountains of the Galilee and Golan 5 to 10 cm. Snow was also recorded in the mountains of the Negev Desert. In the evening, as even colder air entered the region, the snow level dropped to 300 meters in northern Israel and 550 meters in central Israel. The snow fell until the early hours of December 28th, and remained on the ground for two days in some areas of Jerusalem. Such a widespread and heavy snow storm is rare in December and last occured in 1992. December snow in Jerusalem is quite rare and occurs on average once every 10 years. This is the heaviest snow in Jerusalem since February 2004. In total, 120 to 150 mm were recorded in Jerusalem and Mevasseret, respectively, in this event.

August 20, 2006:

    * An upper-level trough, very unusual for the season, caused thunderstorm development in many areas of northen Israel where up to 15 mm of rain were measured. This is a rare event for summer which on average has no rain at all, and last occured in July 1995.
